Fare Rules

Refund Policy

Malaysia Airlines has a detailed fare policy that determines the refund terms and conditions for different ticket classes. Thus, it is suggested to check the policy terms and conditions well before buying a ticket. However, there is generally a provision for ticket cancellation before the actual date of flying. If you have canceled your Malaysia Airlines flight ticket, you may be eligible for a refund, strictly determined by Malaysia Airlines fare conditions. The airline may deduct the cancellation penalty (if any) from the amount and refund the rest of the money in the credit card used to purchase the ticket. For unused or partially used flight ticket refunds, passengers can make an online request by filling the refund request form. The form is available in Malaysia Airlines’ official website.

Cancellation Policy

Travelers can cancel their bookings by contacting local Malaysia Airlines offices. However, people making their bookings through travel agents can also contact the agent to cancel their bookings. Withal, the travelers get a refund after canceling the ticket only if it’s been allowed by the fare conditions of the booking.

Delay Policy

Malaysia Airlines luggage policy depends on the class of airline ticket you have booked. They also have separate rules for carry-on and checked in baggage allowance, compensation for lost, damaged or delayed luggage etc. The airline denies any liability for damage to unchecked baggage unless they cause the damage by their negligence. Further, the airline denies any liability for fair wear and tear of baggage caused by usual and normal rigors of air transportation.
Baggage Policy:

Malaysia Airlines has set some eligibility criteria to get compensation for flight delays. These include (but not limited to):

  • The flight must be scheduled to be operated by Malaysia Airlines.
  • You Must be having a confirmed reservation for the flight.
  • You must have met all the applicable check-in deadlines.
  • You must not have a free or any offer ticket which is not available directly or indirectly to the public.

History

Malaysia Airlines History

In 1947, the airline began as Malayan Airways, being renamed Malaysian Airways after Malaysia gained independence. After that, it changed its name once more to Malaysia-Singapore Airlines (MSA). MSA ceased operations in 1972, and two airlines were born ; Malaysian Airline System(MAS) and Singapore Airlines(SIA).

The differing needs of the two shareholders, however, led to the break-up of the airline just 6 years later. The Singapore government preferred to develop the airline's international routes, while the Malaysian government had no choice but to develop the domestic network first before going regional and eventually international. MSA ceased operations in 1972, with its assets split between two new airlines; Malaysian Airline System (MAS), and Singapore Airlines.

In 1972 MAS operated flights to more than 34 regional destinations and 6 international services. In 1976, after receiving its DC-10-30 aircraft, MAS scheduled flights reached Europe, with initial flights from Kuala Lumpur to Amsterdam, Paris and Frankfurt

In 2013, Malaysia Airlines was joined oneworld which is Malaysia Airlines is the one of a few airlines worldwide rated five-star by Skytrax, which has also honoured the airline for having the World's Best Cabin Staff. With its main operating hub in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Airlines flies to around 80 destinations across Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East and North America.

In 2014, Malaysia Airlines lost two Boeing 777 aircraft within 131 days, with a total of 537 passengers and crew lost. Flight MH370 disappeared in an unknown location (most likely in the Southern Indian Ocean) on 8 March with 239 people on board, leaving little evidence behind; little debris from the plane has been found, all of it off the coast of Réunion. Flight MH17 crashed in eastern Ukraine on 17 July with 298 people on board, after being shot down with a Buk surface-to-air missile.

During May 2015 it was announced that the airline will be transferred to a newly founded Malaysia Airlines Berhad by 1 September 2015, with rebranding of the airline also commences that day. The new company will see an heavily reduced workforce and adjusted route network with focus on Asia according to its new CEO, Christoph Mueller. On October 11, 2015, Malaysia Airlines Berhad announced that it is set to undergo a brand overhaul involving a new name, logo and livery for its aircraft, with the changes to be unveiled next month.
November 3, 2015 Malaysia Airlines introduced their new business class seats which will be fitted on all of their A330's by September 2016.
