Date History
22 Nov 1993 Qatar Airways was founded.
20 Jan 1994 Qatar Airways started it's first operations when the airline was a small regional carrier serving a handful of routes.
1995 The airlines CEO was the Sheikh Hamad Bin Ali Bin Jabor Al Thani who employed a staff of 75.
1997 The airlines was re-launched under the mandate of His Highness The Father Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
2003 Qatar Airways was the first airline in the world to pass the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Operational Safety Audit with a maximum 100 per cent compliance.
2010 Qatar Airways launched flights to 10 new destinations including: Bengaluru (Bangalore), Tokyo, Ankara, Copenhagen, Barcelona, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Phuket, Hanoi and Nice.
2011 Qatar Airways launched flights to 15 destinations with expansion focusing on Europe – Bucharest, Budapest, Brussels, Stuttgart, Venice, Oslo and Sofia, included Shiraz (Iran), Medina (Saudi Arabia), Kolkata (Calcutta), Entebbe (Uganda), Chongqing (China) and its entry to Canada with thrice-weekly flights to Montreal.
April 2011 Qatar Airways reached a milestone reaching 100 destinations in its global route map.
June 2011 Qatar Airways being named "Airline of The Year" at the annual SkyTrax World Airline Awards.
2012 Qatar Airways expanded operations to further destinations – Baku (Azerbaijan), Tbilisi (Georgia), Zagreb (Croatia), Perth (Australia), Kigali (Rwanda), Kilimanjaro (Tanzania), Yangon (Myanmar), Baghdad (Iraq), Erbil (Iraq), Maputo (Mozambique), Belgrade (Serbia) and Warsaw (Poland).
July 2012 Qatar Airways was once again named "Airline of The Year", holding onto its title for second consecutive year.
2013 Qatar Airways has expanded its global footprint to serve Gassim (Saudi Arabia); Najaf (Iraq); Phnom Penh (Cambodia); Chicago, its fourth gateway in the United States; Salalah (Oman), Chengdu (China), Basra (Iraq), Sulaymaniyah (Iraq), Clark International (Philippines), Ta’if (Saudi Arabia), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and Hangzhou (China).
Oct 2013 Qatar Airways became the first Gulf carrier to join the oneworld alliance.
2014 Qatar Airways became the global launch customer of the first Airbus A350.
The carrier launched flights to Sharjah and Dubai World Central in the UAE, Philadelphia (USA), Edinburgh (Scotland), Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport (Turkey), Larnaca (Cyprus), Al Hofuf (Saudi Arabia), Miami (USA), Dallas/Fort Worth (USA), Djibouti (Djibouti) and Asmara (Eritrea) in Africa.
2015 Qatar Airways has extended its route network to more than 150 destinations including flights to Amsterdam (The Netherlands), Zanzibar (Tanzania), Nagpur (India) and Durban (South Africa).
15 Jan 2015 Qatar Airways deployed its newly-received, world-first, Airbus A350 XWB aircraft, on the Frankfurt route.
June 2015 Qatar Airways achieved a major accomplishment receiving the SkyTrax Airline of the Year 2015 accolade for a third time.
2016 Qatar Airways won World's Best Business Class; Best Business Class Airline Lounge and Best Airline Staff Service in the Middle East at the Skytrax Awards.
Qatar Airways was listed on the annual ranking of the world’s top 500 brands, ranking at 451st most valuable brand.
The airline has so far launched routes to Los Angeles (USA), Ras Al Khaimah (UAE), Sydney (Australia), Boston (USA), Birmingham (UK), Adelaide (Australia), Yerevan (Armenia), Atlanta (USA),Marrakech (Morocco), Pisa (Italy), Windhoek (Namibia) and Helsinki (Finland), Krabi (Thailand) and Seychelles.
Qatar Airways became the first airline to fly the A350 to three continents.
12 Sept 2016 Qatar Airways started flying its A380 to Sydney.
2017 Qatar Airways has won awards for Airline of the Year, Best First Class Airline Lounge, Best Airline in the Middle East and World’s Best Business Class by the prestigious 2017 SkyTrax World Airline Awards.
Qatar Airways will add a number of exciting new destinations in 2017/18, including Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Chiang Mai (Thailand), Cardiff (Wales), St Petersburg (Russia) and many more.
Feb 2017 Qatar Airways operates the longest regularly scheduled airline flight, between Qatar – Doha and New Zealand – Auckland.
